VARM raises €5.7M to close the skills gap holding back Europe’s insulation push

We’re co-leading the Berlin startup’s seed round to train a new generation of installers and insulate a million homes.

We’re excited to announce that we’re co-leading the €5.7M seed round of VARM, the German startup making home insulation scalable, alongside Pale Blue Dot and with participation from noa and Foundamental, who led the company’s pre-seed in 2023.

Europe’s energy transition has a labour problem. Heating accounts for roughly one fifth of Germany’s CO² emissions, three-quarters of EU buildings are energy inefficient, and insulating a single-family home can cut its energy use by up to half – yet the European craft sector is short an estimated three million skilled workers. The bottleneck isn’t demand or technology. It’s people.

VARM pairs air-gap insulation technology with training for a local workforce of independent installers, and its Cloud Installers programme gives workers a business-in-a-box to start and scale insulation companies of their own.

Christian Gruener and Sebastian Wuerz are the kind of founders we’d describe, with utmost admiration, as execution machines: second-time builders who treat logistics as a craft.

And they’ve thought hard about who usually gets left out: VARM offers financing, so the households that most need insulation can actually afford it.

The goal: one million homes insulated within ten years.

“The climate transition is usually framed as a technology story, but it lives or dies in skilled hands. VARM trains people into well-paid trades the market desperately needs, then gives them a path to ownership. We couldn’t be more excited to back Christian and Sebastian.”

Mario, Emerge

The funding will expand the installer programme and make insulation more accessible and affordable across Europe.

Christian, Sebastian – welcome to the Emerge community. One million homes. 10 years. Let’s go!
